Which filling material is suitable for which application?
Wadding and polyester fillings are ideal for decorative cushions, toys and products that need to be washed frequently. Natural fillings (e.g. grain fillings) provide weight and store warmth, making them ideal for heating cushions or as support in home accessories. Herbal fillings with lavender or similar flowers also provide a pleasant fragrance, but should only be used where there is no direct skin contact with open mucous membranes.
Processing tips for clean results
- Filling opening: An inner reversible opening or zipper makes refilling and finishing easier.
- Filling: Use a funnel, paper cone or special filling aid to work neatly and in doses.
- Sewing technique: For even distribution in large cushions, darts or chambers (baffle seams) are suitable.
- Select quantity: Less is not always better - slightly tightly filled cushions retain their shape, overly filled cushions become stiff.
Care and safety
Follow the care instructions: Synthetic fillings are usually machine washable, natural fillings can often only be spot cleaned or cleaned by hand. Grain fillings must not be placed in the microwave if they have been treated with certain oils or are damp; herbal fillings are only suitable for the microwave to a limited extent. Test fragrances in advance and look for suitable alternatives in case of allergies.
