Processing tips

Before you attach a fastener, test it on a piece of fabric: thicker fabrics need more stable versions and, if necessary, reinforcement with interlining or a small piece of fabric. Snap fasteners and eyelets are often attached with eyelet pliers, snap fastener pliers or a hand pressing tool; some variants can also be attached with a hammer and pad. Buttons are sewn on in the classic way, Velcro tapes can either be sewn on or, depending on the design, ironed on. For baby projects, make sure the edges are smooth and the materials are skin-friendly.

What to look out for in the material?

Fasteners are available in metal, plastic and wood - each material has its advantages: Metal is very resilient, plastic is lightweight and often colored, wood looks natural and decorative. Choose the variant to suit the intensity of use and washability of the finished piece. A robust version is recommended for areas subject to heavy wear and tear, while a lightweight, skin-friendly version is better for children's clothing.
