Bamboo jersey
Bamboo jersey is a stretchy, supple jersey fabric that is soft to the touch and comfortable to wear. It is particularly suitable for comfortable-fitting clothing, baby clothes and underwear, but also for light dresses, pyjamas and sporty basics.
What makes bamboo jersey special?
Bamboo jersey is valued for its velvety surface, good drape and breathability. The raw material bamboo grows back quickly, which is why it is often considered a more sustainable alternative to some other raw fibers - although the ecological balance also depends on the processing. Many seamstresses like bamboo jersey precisely because of its soft feel and because it caresses sensitive skin.
What is the fabric suitable for?
- T-shirts and longsleeves: flowing and supple
- Baby clothes and underwear: soft and skin-friendly
- Nightwear and loungewear: comfortable and temperature-regulating
- Light dresses and skirts: beautiful drape
Sewing tips
When sewing with bamboo jersey, we recommend using a 70-90 gauge jersey needle (ballpoint) and stretch stitches such as zigzag or triple straight stitch. An overlocker/serger works well for serged edges, while a sewing machine with a stretch or zigzag stitch also delivers clean results. A walking foot can help if the fabric slips during transport. Avoid stretching too much when sewing so that seams do not become wavy.
Care instructions
Bamboo jersey can usually be washed gently at 30 °C; delicate washing and a mild detergent will preserve the softness. To dry, it is best to lay flat or hang dry, strong heat in the dryer can stress the fibers. We recommend pre-washing and shaping the fabric before cutting.
