Merino jersey combines the benefits of fine merino wool with the elasticity and comfort of jersey. This material is soft, breathable and regulates temperature - it warms when it's cold and cools when it gets warmer. Merino is therefore particularly suitable for garments that are worn next to the skin: Baby and children's clothing, underwear, leggings, thin sweaters, hats and cozy homewear.

What makes merino special?

Merino scores with natural properties that amateur seamstresses appreciate: a fine fiber structure for a soft feel, good moisture regulation and often less odorous wearing properties compared to synthetic fibers. Many merino fabrics are also available mulesing-free, which can be an important selling point for responsible buyers. Merino jersey is available in different thicknesses and surfaces - from fine to medium-thick - so you can adapt the material to your project.

What is merino suitable for?

  • Base layers and underwear: soft and skin-friendly
  • Baby clothes: cuddly and temperature-regulating
  • Leisure and sportswear: lightweight, breathable and odor-resistant
  • Accessories such as hats, scarves or lightweight blankets

Sewing and care tips

Merino jersey is a knitted fabric with elasticity - this affects the cut and finish. Use a jersey or circular needle, sew with a stretch stitch (e.g. zigzag or stretch stitch) and work hems with a twin needle or elastic seam. Shoulder areas can be stabilized with seam tape to prevent stretching. Pre-wash briefly before cutting to reduce the tendency to shrink. Gentle washing programs at low temperatures and mild wool detergent are often sufficient for care; avoid high heat and hot drying to prevent felting.

When buying, pay attention to the fiber content and feel: pure merino feels warmer and softer than blends, while blended fabrics are often easier to care for. Colors and heathered tones are good for timeless basics, while bold colors add accents. If you are unsure, sample pieces will help you to get an impression of drape and elasticity.

At your Stoffschwester you will find selected merino jerseys in matching shades and qualities - ideal for sewing right away or as an inspiring fabric stash for new favorite pieces.
