Wool braid
Wool braid is a stretch binding tape made from wool yarns that is ideal for neatening and decorating edges. Its soft feel and slightly textured look make it a popular choice for wool and knitting projects as well as for robust outdoor fashion, accessories and home textiles. Wool braid goes well with natural fibers and gives sewing work a handcrafted, natural look.
What is wool braid suitable for?
- As edging tape for coats, jackets and vests - for edges, facing and visible edges.
- For serging knit or sweat fabric on rib knits, collars and sleeves.
- For decorative edging on bags, scarves, hats or cushions.
- For projects where a soft, warm edge is desired instead of a hard, technical edging.
What is the best way to use wool braid?
Before processing, it is advisable to sew a sample piece: wash or treat a short sample like the finished piece so that you know the behavior of the braid. When sewing, it is helpful to stretch the braid slightly and fix it with fine pins or fabric clips. Depending on the fabric, use a suitable needle (e.g. stretch or universal needle) and a stretch stitch (zigzag or stretch stitch) or a narrow straight stitch if the fabric is not very stretchy. A presser foot with a groove or a walking foot makes it easier to sewing evenly over several layers.
Special features & care
Wool braid has a warm appearance and reduces hard edges. Many variants are slightly stretchy and therefore offer a comfortable fit at rib knits and necklines. Care instructions: Treat wool products with care - hand wash or wool program with low temperatures, dry flat and only iron carefully (with a steam cloth). This will preserve the shape and color for a long time.
