Patch
Patches are little all-rounders: whether as a decorative appliqué, as a quick repair for a hole or as an individual label on bags and jackets. In this category, we show you how versatile patches, iron-on patches and embroidered patches can be and what you should look out for when working with them.
What are patches suitable for?
Patches are suitable for many sewing projects and areas of application. Typical applications are:
- Repairing worn areas on children's clothing or denim
- Personalizing backpacks, hats and jackets
- Reinforcing high-wear areas such as knees or elbows
- Designing gift ideas and DIY projects
How to process patches correctly?
Depending on the design, patches can be ironed on or sewn on. Iron-on patches are practical for quick applications: lay the piece smooth, test the temperature on a scrap of fabric and work with a thin ironing cloth to protect the surface. For a permanent hold or for areas subject to heavy wear, we recommend additionally securing the patch all around with a zigzag or straight stitch. You can sew it on by hand or with a sewing machine - both will hold reliably as long as you choose the right needle and thread size.
Use & care
Patches are easy to care for, but their durability depends on the material and workmanship. Many patches are designed for everyday use, but it is worth giving sensitive fabrics or special materials a quick wash test. Turn the garment inside out before washing and avoid overly aggressive bleaching agents. If you are unsure, your Stoffschwester will be happy to advise you on the best attachment method and care for your project.
