Rib and lace knit jersey
Ribbed and perforated knit jersey is a particularly versatile fabric category for hobby sewers: ribbed jersey provides pleasant crosswise elasticity and dimensionally stable finishes, while perforated knit jersey with an open structure creates airy, decorative effects. Together, these fabrics offer a wide range of possible uses - from T-shirts and dresses to tops, rib knits and lightweight throws.
What are ribbed and perforated jersey suitable for?
Rib knit is particularly suitable where stretch and a snug fit are required - neckbands, sleeve cuffs or tight cuts benefit from the elasticity. Perforated knit jersey is decorative and summery, ideal for airy tops, layered looks or as inserts in dresses. Together, both variants offer creative design options: textured surfaces, contrasting details and attractive plays on transparency.
Sewing tips for a clean result
- Use a jersey or stretch needle and sew with a light stretch (zigzag or stretchy straight stitch).
- For clean sewing and professional finishes, we recommend using a coverstitch machine, twin needle or stretch overlock seams.
- Stabilize neck and arm hems with binding strips or cuffs, use interfacing or stabilizing tape for very stretchy fabrics.
- A rotary cutter and a smooth carpet pad are suitable for cutting; handle loosely falling perforated knit pieces carefully so that the openings are not distorted.
- Iron seam allowances flat and select low temperatures for delicate fibers; gentle washing preserves structure and color.
What makes these fabrics special?
Ribbed and perforated knit jersey combines comfort with style: the ribbed structure ensures good stretchy properties and a sporty, elegant look, while the perforated knit elements add lightness and summery freshness. These fabrics are easy care, supple and can be used for everyday wear as well as for accentuated design details.
