What are snap fasteners suitable for?
Snap fasteners are particularly suitable where a flat, reliable closure is required. They are practical for collars, necklines, sleeve openings, children's clothes and projects made from stretchy fabrics such as jersey, as they do not put much tension on the fabric when opening and closing. They are also an elegant alternative to zippers or buttons for lightweight bags or pouches.
Sewing tips
Snap fasteners are attached with a needle and thread - this makes them ideal if you don't have pliers to hand or prefer to work by hand. This is how you proceed:
- Mark the position and reinforce the fabric with a small stitch or fleece if necessary.
- Make a small hole with a pointed needle or just sewing through the loops of the snap fastener.
- Sew several stitches through the eyelets of the snap fastener part, sew the thread and tie a knot.
- Position the front and back pieces exactly opposite each other so that the fastener grips properly.
Choose the size of the snap fastener to suit the thickness of the fabric: very fine fabrics can tolerate smaller snap fasteners, thicker materials need more robust versions. Classic colors such as silver or black can be combined well, but there are also coated or colored versions for special accents.
