Denim fabrics (denim, twill denim and stretch denim) are characterized by their typical twill weave, durability and a pleasant feel. In our range, you will find heavy and medium qualities, stretch variants for comfortable cuts and differently treated washes that give the fabric character and a soft feel. Denim is not only suitable for classic pants, but also for skirts, jackets, dungarees, vests, bags and robust accessories.
A few points are important when processing denim: pre-washing is recommended before cutting to reduce shrinkage and excess dye. For sewing, choose a 90-100 gauge denim or universal needle and a durable thread. Longer stitch lengths and reinforced overlocker or decorative stitches help to achieve clean sewing. For waistbands and pocket areas, it is worth using interfacing/stiff fleece; for thick layers, a walking foot can make transportation easier.
Practical tips for hobby sewers
- Seam allowances: For thick layers of fabric, plan generously and clean off edges before sewing.
- Topstitching: For the typical jeans look, use thick threads and a longer stitch length.
- Sewing technique: Flat-felled seams or topstitched overlocking ensure long-lasting sewing.
- Tools: Use denim pins, strong threads, strong scissors and, if necessary, pliers for rivets.
- Pre-treatment: Carry out a color test on one edge of the fabric to check color fastness.
When caring for the fabric, you should use low temperatures and as little drying as possible to maintain its shape and color. Many denim fabrics develop their characteristic patina when worn - this makes the fabric lively and special.
