Lining fabrics

Linings are the invisible helpers that make garments look comfortable, dimensionally stable and of high quality. Whether as an inner lining for coats and jackets, as a slip layer for skirts or as a clean inside for dresses - the right choice of lining fabric significantly improves comfort and drape.
Which lining fabrics are suitable?
Common lining fabrics range from acetate and viscose linings to easy care polyester. Acetate linings are known for their silky finish and pleasant feel against the skin, viscose offers good drape and polyester is robust and easy to care for. Depending on the project, pay attention to weight, gloss level and stretchy properties.
What is the best way for hobby seamstresses to work with lining fabrics?
Lining fabrics can be sewn in a similar way to fine fabrics, but require some special processing features:
- Use a fine needle (e.g. 70/10 or 80/12) and a fine thread size to avoid holes.
- Increase the stitch length slightly so that the sewing does not perforate.
- Clean seam allowances or finish with French seams/overlocker.
- When ironing, use a low temperature and an interlining cloth, especially for acetate.
- Check the color and shrinkage behavior on a test piece before washing.
Tips for a perfect lining
For a clean result, fasten the lining at certain points (e.g. shoulders, collar, hem) using hand stitches such as the mattress stitch. When sewing the lining and outer fabric together, ensure the correct length: the lining must not stretch or bunch. Lightweight interfacing or special adhesive interfacing should be checked for compatibility with the lining.
