Softshell & Outdoor
Softshell & Outdoor

Softshell & Outdoor stands for flexible, weatherproof materials that are warm indoors and functional outdoors. Softshell fabrics combine a wind and water-repellent outer layer with a soft, warming inner layer - making them particularly suitable for rain jackets, coats, outdoor pants, children's clothing and practical accessories such as hats or bags.
What makes softshell so special
- Weatherproof: water-repellent and wind-resistant without stiff plastic inserts.
- Comfort: soft fleece lining for warmth with low weight.
- Elasticity: usually with slight stretch for better freedom of movement.
- Versatility: suitable as a rain jacket fabric, for outdoor clothing and robust everyday items.
Processing tips for hobby sewers
A steady hand and the right tools help when sewing softshell: use jersey or stretch needles (e.g. 80/12), a longer stitch length and a stretch stitch or the overlocker for clean seams. A walking foot or non-stick foot can make sewing smoother. Finish edges with the overlocker or a zigzag stitch; visible sewing can be accentuated with zone stitching/topstitching. For thicker layers, thicker needles (90/14) and a sturdy sewing machine are helpful.
What is softshell suitable for?
Softshell fabric by the meter is ideal if you want to sewing weatherproof but movement-friendly clothing: lightweight rain jackets, transitional jackets, softshell pants, children's rainwear or windproof vests benefit from the combination of protection and comfort. Softshell is also a good choice for outdoor accessories such as seat cushions, rucksack straps or practical bags.
Care instructions
Softshell is best preserved if you wash it gently (cold to lukewarm wash), do not use fabric softener and allow it to air dry. If necessary, you can use waterproofing agents suitable for functional fabrics to refresh the water-repellent effect. Follow the care instructions for the fabric in question.
