Tencel, lyocell and modal are delicate, cellulose-based fabrics with a soft feel and beautiful drape - ideal for anyone who likes soft, breathable fabrics. These fibers are known for their pleasant feel, good moisture absorption and elegant drape, making them ideal for blouses, summer dresses, skirts, lightweight pants and cozy tops.

What is this fabric group suitable for?

Whether airy woven fabric for a flowing blouse or fine jersey for a snug shirt: tencel, lyocell and modal fabrics work well as both woven and knitted fabrics. They are particularly popular for items that are worn next to the skin because they are soft and do not scratch. They are also a great choice for children's clothing, sleepwear and underwear.

Processing & sewing tips

  • Wash before cutting: Slight shrinkage possible - always pre-wash.
  • Suitable needles: Microtex needle (70-80) for fine woven fabrics, ballpoint or stretch needle (70-80) for jersey.
  • Sewing machine settings: Fine needle, matching thread, use zigzag or elastic stitch for stretchy fabrics; overlocker for clean edges.
  • Slippery fabrics: Select fine pins, alternatively fine spray starch or Vlieseline as an aid.
  • Topstitching and hemming: Twin needle for jersey hems, light iron fixation for woven fabrics.

Care tips

Wash gently at 30 °C, use mild detergent and avoid high spin cycles. Hang to dry well; machine drying only gentle. Medium ironing temperature and steaming helps without damaging the fibers. Do not use bleach.

Another plus point: the lyocell process (often used for tencel) works in a closed solvent cycle, and modal is usually made from beech wood - both reasons why these fabrics are valued by many sewers as a more environmentally friendly alternative to purely synthetic materials. At your Stoffschwester you will find a carefully selected range of these qualities and practical tips on processing them to make your sewing project a success.
