Cord is a classic, non-stretch trim that can be used in many ways in the home sewing studio. Whether as a drawcord for hoodies and bags, as a decorative cord on cushions and curtains or as a decorative element for gift wrapping – cords give projects support, structure and a handcrafted look.

What is cord good for?

Cords are especially suitable for:

  • Drawstrings and casings on bags, pouches and garments
  • Carry handles and decorative trims on bags and pouches
  • Decorative accents on home textiles such as cushions, throws and curtains
  • Creative craft projects, labeling and gift decoration

How do we work with cord best?

When sewing with cord, it’s worth paying attention to the right stitch technique and needle size. Cords are usually sewn on with a twin needle, a topstitch or zipper foot so they run cleanly. For thicker cords it helps to increase the stitch length slightly and, if necessary, provide a small punched hole or eyelet so the cord can be easily threaded through. To secure the ends, bindings with thread, small end caps or strong adhesive can be used.

What makes a good cord?

Important are even thickness, clean braiding and a pleasant feel. Non-stretch bands retain shape and tension, which is especially important for functional uses such as straps or drawcords. Color vibrancy and lightfastness matter for visible applications as does washability – pay attention to the care instructions of the material used in your project.

At your Stoffschwester you’ll find a selection of cords in different thicknesses and colors, ideally matched to hobby sewers. Get inspired, try combinations and find the right cord for your next sewing project – online or in person at the shop in Vienna.
