Webbing is an indispensable sewing material when stability and wearing comfort are required. Whether as bag webbing, backpack straps or as reinforcing tape in trouser and jacket construction – webbing provides support, shape retention and stylish accents. You can find it in a variety of widths, colors and finishes: from narrow woven tapes to wider bag straps.

What is webbing suitable for?

  • Carrying and shoulder straps for bags, shoppers and backpacks
  • Belts, key straps and dog leashes
  • Reinforcement of bag edges, bag openings and seam edges
  • Decorative inserts and contrast elements in garments and accessories

How do I handle webbing correctly?

Webbing is easy to sew on a sewing machine; use a sturdy needle (e.g. a jeans needle) and a suitable thread. For particularly stressed areas, reinforcements with additional seams or interfacings are advisable. When attaching webbings to bags, cross or box-X stitches as well as bartack stitches have proven effective, as they distribute the load evenly.

Depending on the material, cut edges can fray. For synthetic tapes, briefly heating the edges helps; for cotton tapes, zigzag or overlocker stitches can provide a solution. For clean finishes there are also webbing ends, sliders and carabiners that let you combine function and aesthetics.

What makes good webbing?

High-quality webbing feels dimensionally stable, does not tear easily and keeps its color even with regular use. When buying, look for an even weave and firm edges. Patterns and weave designs offer additional styling options: solid-colored for understated projects, patterned or neon-colored as an eye-catcher.
