What are stretch tapes suitable for?
Elastic tapes are suitable for many applications: Rib knits on sweatshirts, sleeve cuffs, waist and corset areas, tucks in skirts and pants and for stabilizing underwear. Special variants such as lingerie elastic or wool braid are ideal for fine fabrics and body-hugging cuts, while round elastic and elastic cord are often used for pockets, hoods or as drawstrings. Stretch ruffles and serrated braid add decorative accents.
Processing tips for hobby sewers
- When drawing in: Insert elastic evenly distributed, stretch slightly when sewing so that it pulls together with the fabrics.
- Select seam type: Zigzag or stretch stitch are suitable for stretched sewing; overlocker for stretch finishes.
- Note the width: Wider tapes give more support, narrow tapes are less conspicuous and are suitable for fine fabrics.
- Piping and jersey bias tapes: Piping gives structure to edges, jersey bias tapes give a soft finish to stretch edges.
- Sample sewing: Always make a sample seam to adjust the stitch length and tension, especially with very stretchy fabrics.
