Draw-in elastic belongs in every sewing box: as a discreet waist trim, comfortable rib knit or simple draw-in tape for pockets and covers. This elastic tape is particularly practical because it fits comfortably, is easy to pull in and is available in many widths and colors. At your Stoffschwester, you can get stretch tapes that are easy to work with and keep their shape for a long time.

What is retractable elastic suitable for?

Drawstring elastic is suitable for many projects: Trouser and skirt cuffs, sleeve ends, children's clothing, hoods, cushion covers or as replacement elastic in masks. A drawstring can also make the closure of bags or pouches simple and flexible. By choosing the width and thickness, the tape can be adapted to the intended use - narrow versions for fine belts and wide tapes for comfortable waists.

Processing tips

The following procedure is recommended for threading:

  • Before threading, measure the required length and stretch the strap slightly to prevent it from pulling together later.
  • Use a safety pin, a safety tape or a special rubber guide to insert the tape so that it can be inserted cleanly and without twisting.
  • Secure the ends of the elastic securely: sew tightly, enclose in a seam or secure with a small zigzag stitch to prevent the tape from unraveling.
  • Allow for sufficient seam allowance and slight stretch when sewing so that the garment fits comfortably later.

Selection & care

Pay attention to quality when buying: a good elastic is dimensionally stable, skin-friendly and does not crease quickly. Soft, flat tapes are more comfortable for sensitive sewing work; sturdier, thicker versions are suitable for robust applications. Care instructions: Elastic tapes usually tolerate gentle washing and should not be dried at very high temperatures in order to maintain their elasticity.
