Page 2 - French terry
French terry is the lightweight version of the classic sweat fabric - often referred to as French terry. It has a pleasantly soft feel, offers enough structure for casual cuts and is lighter than winter sweatshirt fabric, making it very popular for summer and transitional styles. Plain-colored french terry is versatile and suitable for many projects, from T-shirts to lightweight hoodies to cozy homewear.
What is french terry suitable for?
French terry is particularly suitable for airy pullovers, hoodies and raglan pullovers, uncomplicated dresses and skirts with a casual fit as well as comfortable jogging bottoms and children's clothing. The single-colored qualities make it easy to combine sewing projects with rib knit fabrics, woven fabrics or jacquards. French terry is also ideal for simple basics that are worn frequently.
Processing tips
There are a few tried and tested rules for hobby sewers to ensure clean and durable sewing results:
- Always pre-wash before cutting so that the fabric does not shrink later.
- Pay attention to the direction of stretch when cutting: Transverse elasticity is crucial for fit and comfort.
- Use ballpoint or jersey needles so that the stitches are not impaled.
- Use stretch stitches, zigzag or overlocker/serger; use twin needle or coverstitch machine for hems.
- If necessary, stabilize shoulder and necklines with binding tape or binding tape.
Care & material instructions
French terry is often made of cotton or cotton blends with a small amount of elastane. A gentle wash cycle at 30-40 °C is usually sufficient. Lay flat to dry or dry gently to avoid deformation. Ironing at a moderate temperature, preferably over a cloth, protects the surface.
