Page 5 - Sewing
Sewing thread is the basis for successful sewing projects - whether garments, bags or home textiles. At Die Stoffschwester, you will find a wide range to help hobby sewers choose the right thread thickness and quality for every fabric. Our selection includes universal sewing threads, stretch variants, Extra Strong threads as well as fine silk threads and robust threads for denim and outdoor use.
Which threads for which projects?
- All-purpose thread: For light to medium-weight cotton and viscose fabrics as well as for many everyday seams.
- Elastic thread: Ideal for rib knits, stretch fabrics and elastic seams, ensures flexible seams without tearing.
- Extra Strong thread: For heavy fabrics, pockets and stressed sewing where more tear resistance is required.
- Buttonhole thread and silk thread: For particularly fine, neat seams, buttonholes or decorative seams with an elegant sheen.
- Denim and outdoor yarn: Durable for denim, workwear and weatherproof applications.
The most important principle when selecting is to match the thread thickness and type to the fabric and intended use. A fine thread is sufficient for thin fabrics, for thicker layers of fabric or stress seams, choose a stronger thread. Color and material also play a role: a suitable color conceals sewing, while certain fibers such as silk or special synthetics provide a special sheen or elasticity.
Sewing tips
Use the right needle size and check the thread tension and stitch length on your sewing machine to avoid loops or breaks. Special needles are suitable for stretch sewing and, if necessary, inserting stretch threads into the bobbin. For thick materials, you can work with thicker needles and a longer stitch length. Clean sewing is also achieved by using coordinated sewing techniques and the right threads.
If you are unsure, we will be happy to advise you in person at the Die Stoffschwester store in Vienna or online. Browse through the categories, compare material properties and find the sewing thread that suits your project - so that your sewing piece ends up exactly as you imagined it.
