Stretch
Stretch is elastic woven fabric with incorporated elastane or spandex, which combines freedom of movement with the elegant look of woven fabrics. Cotton stretch combines the natural feel of cotton with pleasant comfort and slight elasticity - perfect if you want to sewing clothes that fit without being restrictive.
What is stretch suitable for?
Stretch fabrics are particularly suitable for pants, skirts, dresses, blazers and light jackets as well as for children's fashion where comfort is important. Depending on the weave and weight of the woven fabric - from a satin look to twill - different looks can be achieved: smooth and elegant for more chic styles or robust and textured for everyday pants.
Sewing tips for hobby sewers
- Use a stretch needle or a fine universal needle and suitable thread quality so that the seams give with movement.
- Use stretch stitches (e.g. stretch stitch or zigzag) for stretchy seams; straight seams can tear under heavy strain.
- For hems: Twin needle or stretch decorative stitch for flexible, professional-looking finishes.
- Use slightly shaping interlinings (stretchy interlinings) so that collars, facing and pockets remain stable and stretchy.
- Pre-wash and shape the fabric before cutting to avoid any surprises when worn later.
Care and special features
Cotton stretch is easy to care for: gentle machine washing at a moderate temperature and air drying will extend its life. Avoid ironing the elastane content too hot; iron with pressure protection if necessary. When cutting, pay attention to the stretch thread (direction of most elasticity) and cut out sections accordingly.
